Missing Teeth

An Advanced Alternative to Dental Implants

Missing teeth can affect more than just your appearance. They can impact how your teeth function, how your bite fits together, and even your confidence. At Dr. Doug Orthodontics, we offer an advanced orthodontic solution for patients missing upper lateral incisors that can often eliminate the need for dental implants.

About 5 percent of people are born missing at least one tooth. The most commonly missing tooth is the upper lateral incisor, which sits right next to your two front teeth. Because these teeth are in a very visible area, missing them can significantly affect your smile.

Traditionally, the standard recommendation was to leave the space open until the patient turned 18 and could receive a dental implant. This often meant years of wearing a retainer with a temporary tooth or relying on a temporary bridge that could loosen or fall out.

We take a different approach.

Why Space Closure Was Difficult in the Past

Closing spaces from missing lateral incisors has historically been challenging. When braces are used to pull the back teeth forward, the two front teeth can unintentionally shift backward. This unwanted movement can flatten the smile or even create bite problems.

With traditional orthodontics, it was difficult to move certain teeth while keeping others completely stable. Because of this limitation, many patients were told implants were their only option.

Dr. Doug’s Advanced Space Closure Technique

Dr. Doug uses two modern orthodontic advancements to safely and predictably close spaces caused by missing lateral incisors without the unwanted side effects.

Temporary Anchorage Devices TADs

TADs are small temporary anchors placed in the palate. They provide extra stability during treatment and allow us to move teeth precisely. Placement takes only minutes, and they are removed once treatment is complete.

Custom 3D Printed T-Bar Anchor

Dr. Doug also uses a custom metal 3D printed T-bar appliance that connects to the TADs and stabilizes the front teeth. This prevents the central incisors from shifting backward while the remaining teeth are moved forward to close the spaces.

By precisely controlling tooth movement, we can close the missing lateral spaces in cases that previously would have required implants.

What Happens After the Spaces Are Closed

Once the spaces are fully closed, the canine teeth can be carefully reshaped to resemble lateral incisors. When properly finished, the result looks natural and balanced.

Treatment time is similar to most comprehensive orthodontic cases and typically takes around 18 months. Most patients report that this technique feels no different than traditional braces.

Why Many Patients Prefer This Option

Orthodontic space closure allows patients to avoid dental implants and the long-term maintenance that comes with them. It uses your natural teeth to create a stable, long-lasting result and eliminates the need for temporary appliances during the teenage years.

Is This Right for Everyone

Not every patient is a candidate, but far more patients qualify today than in the past thanks to these advanced techniques. During your consultation, Dr. Doug will carefully evaluate your bite, tooth positioning, and overall smile to determine whether this approach is right for you.
